Sustainability – more than just environmental stewardship

As sustainability considerations increasingly drive consumer purchasing decisions and public pressure mounts, the cosmetics industry is challenged to find innovative approaches with lasting impact. With “Responsibly Active”, BASF has committed to making sustainable practices a priority in its bioactives business, protecting the planet and its resources, and empowering people across the value chain – beyond corporate responsibility and out of personal conviction. Two years into the programmeme, we spoke to Lucilene Veira Nunes, Head of Business Management for Bioactive Ingredients, EMEA, about the progress made and the challenges ahead.

Sensible sensitive skin

Skin reacting to the environment, products used, or circumstances forced upon someone is more common than one might think but relief is possible given the consumer can narrow down the reasons why.

Feminine care

In recent years, feminine care for women of all ages has attracted consumer interest. While feminine care, including intimate health, is often still a taboo subject in many parts of the world, an increasing number of cosmetic companies started to tear down the walls on this specific topic. They intend to answer the growing demand for personalised cosmetic care products for women to meet their biological needs, since they tend to vary remarkably throughout a woman’s life. This novel trend in self-care reinforces women’s sense of personal well-being and security, so that they can feel comfortable, and well-resourced to go through their busy flexi-lifestyles.

The future
is solid

With beauty and personal care behemoths L’Oreal, Proctor & Gamble, Unilever, Colgate-Palmolive and Beiersdorf all making various pledges to reduce plastics in their latest Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) Reports, the personal care ingredients industry needs to step up to the plate to deliver innovation to support this drive, says Stephenson’s Managing Director, Robert Carr.

Multifaceted beauty

As interest in health grows around the world, a more multifaceted idea of beauty is taking hold. Hybrid cosmetics embrace the wellness trend – combining makeup with other benefits – more often than not skincare but in some cases overall wellbeing. These products are designed to enhance the body while providing the aesthetic appeal of makeup. Multifunctional benefits can include hydration, fortification, anti-ageing and protection from external aggressors like pollution – all this while providing the aesthetic appeal of makeup.

Nostalgia and product reformulation

With the emphasis on ‘skinimalism’ and multi-functionality in the beauty and colour cosmetic market here to stay, consumers are investing in buying less, but better-quality products. This is creating fantastic opportunities for colour cosmetic reformulations, with new R&D continuing to breathe fresh air into the beauty and cosmetics space.

New toothpaste regulations

Toothpaste is a fast-moving consumer good for maintaining oral health. The Chinese government has been dedicated to enhancing supervision and management of this category while continuously improving relevant policies.

Powder SPF in-vitro method

The market for sun care products is expanding quickly as people are becoming progressively aware of the need for protecting their skin from UV rays. Today’s consumers are looking for effective protection from sun damage and unique formulations and textures to increase that effectiveness.

Online commerce and counterfeits

The online market for counterfeit skin creams and perfumes is growing rapidly. Companies whose products flood the internet as plagiarism lose reputation, customer trust and sales. In the coming months they will have to adapt to new distribution channels and locations for counterfeiters.

Global consumer trends

Market research company Euromonitor International has released one of its most popular reports called Global Consumer Trends, which looks at trends that will shape consumer markets in 2024 and beyond. Here are the three most important implications for the beauty market:

New values in hair care

Consumer values are evolving rapidly, expanding their expectations beyond safety, sustainability, and transparency to include a focus on individuals. Beauty brands are now expected to provide safe cosmetic products with strong performance and measurable benefits, but also inclusive and engaged solutions for consumers who are increasingly demanding more than showcasing quality and efficacy.

Ready for tomorrow

The topic of sustainability is booming – in almost all areas of our lives. In times when climate change is no longer just a hypothetical threat for people all over the world but is becoming more and more tangible, a sustainability policy for companies has long since ceased to be a nice thing to have. At issue is not just the sustainability of the products sold and their packaging, but increasingly also the fundamental sustainability standards that a company meets.

Futuristic outlook

Mintel has identified three beauty trends that we think are particularly interesting for beauty and personal care (BPC) brands to pay attention to – now and in the future. These trends are created to help guide BPC brands alongside shifts in consumer attitudes and behaviours.

Cosmetic Product or not?

For some products, the definition is pretty clear: they are easily identified as cosmetic products. But in some cases, a definite classification is a lot harder. Christina Klima from Lemikos takes a closer look at the so called borderline products in cosmetics.
