Croda Inc Announces TERRAQUAT™ BD

Biodegradable Conditioning Agent with Great Performance
Sustainability is a leading trend in the personal care industry as consumers and product developers alike search for more environmentally friendly products.  As consumers consider, and are concerned about, the impact of their daily activities, from cleaning their homes to grooming rituals, demand is growing for products that provide less and less impact on the environment.  Even consumers who do not categorize themselves as extremely “green” are becoming more likely to purchase sustainable and environmentally-friendly products if they are cost competitive and show similar performance to traditional products.
TERRAQUAT BD is an ultimately biodegradable conditioning agent coupled with an excellent aquatic toxicity profile that delivers the performance of traditionally used conditioning agents.  This environmentally friendly product provides conditioning and detangling benefits to both rinse off and leave on hair care formulations and is even versatile enough to be incorporated into shampoo formulations, unlike other biodegradable conditioning agents currently on the market.
Green concepts are great for marketing stories and an initial purchase, but products need to perform to achieve that desired second (and third and fourth…) purchase.  TERRAQUAT BD was compared to Behentrimonium Chloride, a benchmark conditioning agent commonly used in both shampoos and conditioners, to determine if this environmentally friendly product would stand up to the performance of a traditional conditioning agent.  For both shampoo and conditioner evaluations, a simple formulation was developed containing either TERRAQUAT BD or Behentrimonium Chloride as the conditioning agent, with the remaining ingredients remaining consistent, and then evaluated for conditioning and detangling benefits on both wet and dry hair.  In the laboratory, the TERRAQUAT BD shampoo and conditioner performed as well (if not better) than the Behentrimonium Chloride formulations.
