Sustainable packaging involves using materials that cause less harm to the environment by being recyclable, biodegradable, or having a lower carbon footprint. Traditional materials, like plastic, take hundreds of years to decompose, contributing to pollution in landfills and oceans. In contrast, materials like mycelium decomposes within weeks, is CO2 negative and even contributes to soil health when composted. However, transitioning to eco-friendly packaging can be challenging, especially for small and medium-sized businesses. These companies often face obstacles such as setup costs, longer production times, and inflexible order quantities, making it difficult to switch to more sustainable options.

A solution that works?

“ONE4” Mycelium packaging addresses these challenges by offering a customisable, sustainable packaging option that is easy to produce. It features a carbon-negative mycelium insert paired with a fully brandable paper box or paper sleeve, giving companies an eye-catching, eco-friendly solution. Mycelium is fully biodegradable and is combined with agricultural waste, such as hemp, to create a strong, unique packaging material.

How mycelium reduces CO2 emissions

Mycelium packaging has another big advantage: it helps lower carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. During the growth of hemp, which is often used in mycelium packaging, CO2 is captured from the air. This process, known as photosyn- thesis, helps reduce greenhouse gases. When mycelium and hemp are combined to make packaging, the carbon stored during the plant’s growth stays in the product. Even though some CO2 is released during production, mycelium packaging stores more carbon than it emits, making it carbon-negative. This is a major improvement compared to materials like EPS, which have a large carbon footprint because they are made from fossil fuels. In fact, mycelium packaging saves around 600 grams of CO2 per liter compared to EPS packaging.

Customisable, flexible, fast production

The new mycelium packaging is also highly adaptable, making it ideal for small and medium-sized businesses. Unlike many eco-friendly options, which often require larger orders and longer production times, this packaging can be produced quickly, with orders ranging from as few as 40 units to as many as 5,000. The boxes are  customisable, allowing businesses to choose the size and design that best fits their brand and product needs.

The economic benefits of sustainable packaging

Sustainable packaging doesn’t just help the environment–it also benefits businesses. By reducing waste, companies can lower recycling and disposal costs. Additionally, eco-friendly packaging makes a strong impression on customers, helping brands stand out. For businesses, using “ONE4” mycelium packaging means they can highlight their sustainable practices while also offering high-quality protection for their products and helping them stand out in the market.

The future of packaging

As businesses continue to move towards more sustainable options, packaging will play an important role in reducing their environmental impact. Mycelium packaging offers an easy-to-use, customisable, and eco-friendly solution for companies of all sizes. By choosing sustainable materials, companies can protect their products while making a positive impact on the planet.
