Measuring Skin Barrier Function: Objective Data for Reliable Cosmetic Testing

Demonstrating cosmetic efficacy goes beyond clinical observation and volunteer feedback. The Tewameter® provides a scientifically established, objective approach by measuring transepidermal water loss (TEWL) – an important indicator of skin barrier integrity.
TEWL measurement offers valuable insights when evaluating moisturising and nourishing formulations, products for dry or sensitive skin or scalp, skin tolerance and claims related to barrier protection or recovery. Repeated measurements can document changes over time and provide robust data to support efficacy claims such as barrier improvement, protection, regeneration, soothing, anti-irritation and non-occlusive performance.
Skin permeability and dermal absorption are essential parameters in safety and efficacy testing. Using a Tewameter® specially designed for fitting on a Franz Cell, these parameters can be investigated in vitro. Across a wide range of applications, the Tewameter® family offers suitable instruments for specific testing requirements – providing reliable, objective data on skin barrier function.
