HerbaProtect NOX is a novel COSMOS-approved sun care active that protects the skin against peroxynitrite-induced UV damage as well as Infrared-A (IR-A)-induced skin aging. The glycerol-based, unpreserved and self-preserving active consists of active components derived from high-quality pomegranate flower, perilla leaf and kakadu plum.
HerbaProtect NOX reduces the UV-mediated enzymatic stress response and the formation of intracellular nitrogen and oxygen species leading to DNA damage in form of dark CPD (cyclobutane pyrimidine dimer). A key role in this process plays the powerful oxidant peroxynitrite, forming highly reactive intermediates, which can further promote skin damage. HerbaProtect NOX neutralizes peroxynitrite, inhibits enzymes involved in the formation of peroxynitrite and reduces the formation of endogenous ROS species at a cellular level. Thereby, it leads to the prevention of dark CPD formation, extracellular cell matrix degradation, and other signs of photoaging.
Antioxidants were shown to provide a protective effect against IR-A-induced skin aging. Since HerbaProtect NOX immediately increases the antioxidant capacity of human skin in vivo for several hours, it is also a perfect IR-A protection in sun care formulations.
