Two new low molecular weight proteins are capable of penetrating into the cortex of hair to reduce damage caused by environmental, mechanical and chemical stressors. Guadalupe Pellon, Head of Strategic Marketing Europe Hair Care at BASF explains details in her COSSMA-interview.
Which ingredients are currently particularly popular in hair care?
Guadalupe Pellon, Head of Strategic Marketing Europe Hair Care, BASF:
It is well known that the use of protein provides additional benefits for our hair. Keratin is still the preferred protein active ingredient, accounting for more than 60 percent* of launched hair care products containing proteins. Following this keratin trend, both consumers and manufacturers are looking for plantbased alternatives to the animal keratin protein.
Could you please describe the micro-proteins you recently developed?
We have developed two new low molecular weight protein hydrolysates. While many protein hydrolysates produce their effects on the surface of the hair or at the cuticle, the low molecular weight proteins Nutrilan Keratin LM and Gluadin Kera-P LM penetrate through the cuticle and deep into the cortex. This is where they – consisting of up to 95 percent keratin – ‘reload’ the hair with missing protein building blocks and thus contribute to stress-relief. On the hair surface, both micro-proteins also provide protection for the cuticle.
What are the special features of Gluadin Kera-P LM?
Gluadin Kera-P LM is based on plant-derived protein building blocks. This made this protein BASF’s first low molecular phyto-keratin for the personal care market. With an amino acid spectrum similar to that of keratins of animal origin, it offers a vegan alternative to conventional keratins. Due to its deep penetration properties, it reduces damage to the hair surface.
Could you please characterise the properties of Nutrilan Keratin LM?
Nutrilan Keratin LM is a natural keratin building block. This micro-protein with an amino acid composition close to that of human keratin is designed for natural hair strengthening, penetrating into the deep layers of the hair with a long-lasting effect. It reduces hair-breakage and protects the hair against external aggressors.
