Hybrid cosmetics combine high-performance makeup with proven skincare benefits, meeting growing demand for effective, convenient and multifunctional beauty solutions. Hydration, skin longevity and barrier support are shaping the next generation of color cosmetics.
COSSMA: How important are hybrid beauty products to your current product innovation strategy?
Cornelia Riepl: Hybrid beauty is one of the key pillars of our innovation strategy. We see a clear shift from consumers expecting makeup products to simply deliver color or coverage, toward expecting them to actively improve the condition of the skin over time. For us, hybrid innovation is about combining high-performance makeup with scientifically supported skincare benefits without compromising either.
This philosophy is reflected across our recent launches. Whether it’s our Skip-the-filler lifter liner, which combines long-wear lip definition with clinically supported hydration and visible plumping, or our latest eyeshadow innovations featuring proven skin care benefits for the delicate eye area, our goal is always to create products that deliver immediate color cosmetic performance alongside long-term skin benefits.
Which consumer benefits are driving the strongest demand for multifunctional cosmetics in your target markets?
Consumers increasingly want products that simplify their routines while delivering visible results. Hydration remains the foundation, but we’re also seeing strong demand for products that support skin longevity, strengthen the skin barrier, visibly smooth fine lines, and improve firmness over time. Convenience is equally important. Consumers no longer want to choose between skincare and makeup – they expect one product to do both. Long wear, comfortable textures, and sensorial application have become just as important as active ingredients. The strongest hybrid products successfully combine efficacy, performance and an enjoyable user experience.
□What are the biggest challenges your brand faces when developing products that deliver both makeup performance and proven skincare efficacy?
The biggest challenge is achieving the right balance. Consumers expect uncompromising makeup performance – whether that’s color payoff, wear time, transfer resistance or texture – while also expecting clinically-meaningful skincare benefits. Many skincare actives can influence texture, stability or wear performance, so formulation requires careful optimization.
As an innovation partner for beauty brands, we invest significantly in formulation science to ensure neither aspect is compromised. Equally important is substantiating performance. Hybrid products must deliver measurable skincare benefits while maintaining the premium makeup experience consumers expect.

How important is clinical or consumer tested efficacy data when evaluating hybrid cosmetic solutions from manufacturing partners?
It’s becoming increasingly important. Beauty brands today want credible proof to support their product claims, and consumers are also becoming much more ingredient- and evidence-conscious. Clinical and consumer testing helps build confidence throughout the value chain. It enables brands to communicate benefits with greater transparency while giving consumers reassurance that the product delivers measurable results rather than marketing promises. For example, our latest hybrid innovations are supported by clinical studies demonstrating measurable improvements in hydration, skin firmness, elasticity or lip volume, depending on the product.

Which product categories offer the greatest opportunity for hybrid innovation within your portfolio (lips, face, brows, eyes, complexion, or other)?
Lips remain one of the most exciting categories. We’re seeing lip products evolve into genuine treatment products, combining color cosmetics with peptides, ceramides, hyaluronic acid and other advanced skincare technologies. However, we also see tremendous potential in eye products and complexion.
The delicate eye area particularly benefits from products that combine long-lasting performance with ingredients that help improve skin condition over time. More broadly, every makeup category has the potential to become more skincare-driven as consumers increasingly expect multifunctionality across their entire beauty routine.

To what extent do consumers expect makeup products to include active skincare ingredients today compared with three years ago?
The expectation has changed dramatically. Three years ago, skincare benefits were often considered a bonus. Today, many consumers see them as an essential requirement, particularly in premium beauty. This reflects broader trends such as “skintelligence”, longevity beauty and the move toward preventative skincare.
Consumers are becoming more knowledgeable about ingredients and increasingly expect makeup to contribute positively to skin health rather than simply provide cosmetic effects. We’re also seeing a shift from products promising instant transformation toward products that combine immediate visible results with cumulative long-term benefits.

How do sustainability goals influence your interest in multifunctional products that can simplify beauty routines and reduce product consumption?
Multifunctionality naturally supports more sustainable consumption because one well-designed product can replace several single-purpose products. This simplifies routines, reduces product clutter and can also help minimize packaging and resource use. At the same time, sustainability has to be considered holistically. It is not only about reducing the number of products but also about creating formulations that consumers genuinely enjoy using and continue using until the product is finished. Long-lasting performance, high efficacy and multifunctionality all contribute to more responsible consumption.

Which emerging trends do you believe will have the greatest impact on the future of hybrid cosmetics: skinification, longevity beauty, wellness-focused formulations, clean beauty, or personalized solutions?
We don’t see these trends as competing with one another – they increasingly overlap. However, if we had to highlight the strongest drivers, we would point to skinification and longevity beauty. Consumers are shifting away from quick fixes and increasingly investing in maintaining healthy skin over time.
That mindset naturally extends into makeup. We believe the next generation of hybrid cosmetics will combine scientifically-credible active ingredients, clinically-supported efficacy, and exceptional sensory experiences. At the same time, wellness is becoming part of beauty. Consumers want products that feel good to use, fit seamlessly into everyday routines and contribute to overall wellbeing. The future belongs to products that successfully combine performance, care, credibility and pleasure in a single solution.
