I.R.A. Srl: PHOTO-STABILITY OF SUNSCREENS IN CROSS-LINKED HYALURONIC ACID: DERMAHYAL® SUN M

It is well known that the solar filters, when applied to the skin for a prolonged period of time and in large areas of the body, are absorbed and may cause adverse effects.
DERMAHYAL® SUN M is a new photostabilizing and photoprotective system developed by I.RA. Istituto Ricerche Applicate. This innovative raw material is a gel of cross-linked hyaluronic acid of biotechnological origin in which sun filters are included, reducing their skin contact and absorption.
The cross-linking agent is UREA, that unlike other cross-linking agents which remain free in the products as residues and are potentially harmful to health, is not toxic and it has moisturizing power.
The cross-linked hyaluronic acid is more resistant to enzymatic degradation due to hyluronidase, therefore it is degraded much more slowly, remaining undamaged on the cutaneous surface for a lingering period.
A preliminary assessment of cutaneous absorption carried out by I.R.A. demonstred that the three solar filters, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane, Methylene Bis-benzotriazolyl Tetramethylbutylphenol, included in DERMAHYAL® SUN M are absorbed lower than sunscreens in free form. Experimental data confirm an average in absorption reduction of approximately 50%.
The difference of solar protection factor (SPF) and UVA protection factor was evaluated with Colipa in vitro method 2011 based on the evaluation of UV transmittance through a thin film of solar product distributed on an appropriate substrate before and after exposure to a controlled dose of UV radiation from a specific source.
DERMAHYAL® SUN M cream was compared with a cream with solar filters in free form and the results showed that at the same concentration of sunscreens there is the achievement of an high SPF and a greater stability of sunscreens included in DERMAHYAL® SUN M.
The inclusion of sun filters in cross-linked hyaluronic acid provide: skin tolerability and reduced absorption with decreasing toxicity of sunscreens, greater photo-stability of sunscreens, better homogeneity of filters on the skin and better texture of the product and low concentration of use of sunscreens with less impact on the body and the environment.
DERMAHYAL® SUN M can be used in all cosmetic facial and body formulation (gel, cream, lotion) adding the raw material on the cold semi-finished product (aqueous and lipidic phases already emulsified), mixing and turbomixing for all the needed time to obtain an homogeneous product.
DERMAHYAL® SUN M is a raw material in compliance with EEC regulations and Australian regulations (the most restrictive).
