Cornelius advises new skincare routines needed for change of seasons

The cold temperatures and harsh conditions of winter can wreak havoc on the skin.
Speciality ingredients distributor and manufacturer, Cornelius Group, examines the skincare products which help to avoid dryness and redness during the winter months and keep skin complexion radiant.
During the Winter skin sebum levels are reduced and Trans Epidermal Water Loss (TEWL) increases. Combined with a drop in skin moisturisation and elasticity, the result is dry, tight skin which requires intensive nourishment and a bit of tender, loving care.
Skincare products, designed to address problems caused by colder temperatures, tend to be thicker and heavier as the oil phase ratio is increased to feed and protect the skin from the elements.
Products should have a higher emollient content and ideally provide an occlusive effect to counter the barrier damage. Any actives included should be focused on moisturising, lipid boosting and improving barrier function.
The new emulsifier from BASF, Emulgade® Sucro Plus (INCI: Sucrose Polystearate, Cetyl Palmitate), is naturally derived, mild and forms lamellar structures which help to moisturise dry skin. It also provides excellent cushioning and absorption leaving a silky feel to the skin.
Combining this with the recently launched Creamy Shea from Olvea (INCI: Shea Butter Glycerides) will result in a rich, creamy formulation with enhanced skin sensorial properties and will boost barrier function. Actives such as Silab’s Glycorepair® from carob seeds will also speed up barrier recovery for damaged skin and is particularly suitable for intensive lip balms to repair cracked lips.
Wash products should incorporate mild, non-drying surfactants such as Pationic ISL (INCI: Sodium Isostearoyl Lactylate) which has been proven in independent clinical trials to moisturise skin for up to four hours when used in a wash product.
The inclusion of Lamesoft® PO65 (INCI: Coco-glucoside (and) Glyceryl Oleate) will provide lipid layer enhancement properties to shower products leaving the skin feeling smooth and moisturised; whilst the addition of Lamesoft® OD (INCI: Coco Caprylate (and) Lauryl Glucoside (and) Glycerine (and) Polyglyceryl-2 Dipolyhydroxystearate (and) Polyglyceryl-3 Diisotearate) will ensure a high amount of nourishing oil is deposited onto the skin from the formulation.
Winter is also the party season for many; a time for glitter, glamour and sparkle. Incorporating pearlescent pigments into winter products can complement pale skin and create dazzling, eye catching effects. Chione™ HD Digital pink is a synthetic mica based on fluorphlogopite which can subtly boost radiance and luminosity giving the skin an instant healthy glow.
New from BASF is Chione™ Celestial Gold, again this is a fluorphlogopite based pearl, with a white gold colour shade and a shimmering glow and shine. It has a large particle size but this does not compromise the feel of the product on the skin, making it perfect for adding premium effects to body and decolletage products.
It’s easily forgotten how delicate faces are when exposed to the harsh cold weather and it’s important to alter skin care routines to reflect the change in seasons. By implementing some simple changes in a skincare routine, skin can stay healthy looking all year round.
