Nowadays it is recognized that a high amount of the harmful effects to skin are due to molecular species known as “free radicals” or radical oxygen species (ROS). As this leads to a premature ageing of the skin the demand for antioxidant agents is getting more and more important.
The necessity to protect oneself against the sun radiation is also accepted. Mainly with sun filters to prevent sunburn which is provoked by UV-B but also against the UV-A induced free radicals.
IR’s effects on skin have long been ignored. However, in the last few years, an increasing number of studies are demonstrating the important role played by IR in inflammation and photo-ageing. One third of all IR energy penetrates the skin and it now becomes clear that IR-A ends up producing biological effects that are similar to those observed for UVs. Subsequently, it seems important to focus on this long-unknown danger and provide solutions to the skin problems caused by IR and help prevent IR-Ageing.
For this application Sederma proposes VENUCEANE™, an active coming from the deep-sea. By reducing the intracellular ROS and pro-inflammatory mediators, by maintaining the synthesis of dermal macromolecules as collagen, by reducing MMP-1 and stimulating the mitochondrial activity VENUCEANE™ supports the fight against premature ageing. In vitro testings with UV and IR revealed a strong anti-oxidative capacity. Interestingly, this activity even improved with temperature which is helpful regarding IR radiation.
In vivo Skin ageing is manifested in many ways: dry skin, loss of elasticity and texture, decreased skin thickness, dull appearance, compromised cutaneous barrier, appearance of lentigines, changes in the isotropy of surface lines, appearance of wrinkles. In a 6 months efficacy study under high sun exposure it could be shown that VENUCEANE™ can precautionary minimize all these aspects of skin ageing.
