Market development: Aerosols
Aerobal announced that the global aluminium aerosol can industry produced about 8.1 billion cans 2017.
The British Aerosol Manufacturers’ Association (BAMA) revealed that a record 1.562 billion cans were filled in the UK in 2017. The personal care sector accounted for the largest volume of products (1.13 billion aerosols filled). Anti-perspirants were the biggest seller in this sector and across the industry overall with BAMA data showing that 470m anti-perspirants were manufactured in 2017 – 13m more than the previous year, representing 3% growth. The annual statistics also show that the hair care sector had the largest growth over the past 12 months with 31% more products filled in 2017 than in 2016 – 150.5m and 114.8m respectively. These products include dry shampoo, mousse and hairsprays. Shaving products continued to sell well (171.7m products filled) as did perfumes and colognes, which grew by 15% to 8.3m products filled.
New developments in spraying technology
Thanks to intensive development and trials, the R&D team managed to make the formula of Aquaphor from Beiersdorf sprayable and thus easier to apply. Previously, this product was only available in jar and tube formats. Unlike a spray lotion, the ointment is water-free and locks in moisture to keep skin hydrated. It can even spray upside down. The new, patented spraying technology, winner of this year’s ADF Award in the pharmacy category, goes beyond the standard bag-on-valve system, suitable mainly for low viscous formulas, to allow spraying of the highly viscous Aquaphor formula. The main challenge was to find the right mix of propellant and ointment together with the right aerosol header to deliver the best spray possible with the best sensory properties. The formula scale-up required six different scale-up parameters (including temperature and mixing speed) in order to obtain a final product that was as close as possible to the original.
Polpak Packaging’s latest spraying bottle is a breakthrough in the application of a wide variety of liquids. The bottle extends the release time of the contents, which are applied in the form of an extremely fine mist, which can quickly and evenly cover large areas of the target surface. The sprayer nozzle design provides a much better quality of application than other solutions, such as plain spray nozzles. Moreover, the whole technology is environmentally friendly, as the bottle and the sprayer closure are two separate parts, which makes the packaging reusable.
Actuators for enhanced application
Aptar presents Runway: this very practical solution for aerosols offers two possible gestures depending on the circumstances: a trigger gesture for application to others, with the index finger below the spray, optimal for hairdressers applying the product to clients or parents to children, or a conventional application to oneself with the index finger above the spray.
Lindal’s Sunny is a customisable twist-lock actuator. With a twist and a click, you can eliminate undesired actuation of personal care products such as deodorants, anti-perspirants, sunscreens or self-tanning lotions. The design also provides a point of differentiation for brands.
Award-winning solutions, materials and testing
BAMA’s Aerosol of the Year 2017 was awarded to Sanctuary Spa’s 3 Day Long Lasting Moisture Shower Burst; a bag on valve aerosol format. The spray, produced by Swallowfield, offers a rich texture combined with long-lasting fragrance technology in an eye-catching aerosol pack format. Swallowfield also won the Process Training and Safety Award.
Tubex’ Neucan 2.0 – Aerosol Cans Light is a joint development of a new alloy material by the slug suppliers Neuman and Rheinfelden together with the Tubex Group. With the aim of achieving sustainability through weight reduction, a material reduction potential of up to 17 % was obtained. The concept of Neucan 2.0 combines the use of alloy components and a slug manufacturing process especially developed for this new alloy. As extreme and challenging shapes are Tubex’ core competence, the new alloy material had to meet these requirements as well.
Zigler’s stability chambers for aerosol cans are designed to conduct tests of cosmetic aerosol cans and other products in a controlled environment: stability testing, shelf life and package testing. In case of leakage, the chamber is ventilated automatically without stopping the test. In the event of a sharp increase in gas concentration, tests are ended and the chamber is rapidly ventilated.
