Pida: A great unboxing experience makes the oils pop up

BillerudKorsnäs gave the Pida Highest Level of Innovation Award to the packaging concept Organic Oils by Hanna Nyman, Denise Spencer Antoft and Stina Olsson. Their project was characterised by a great unboxing experience that makes the product (organic oils) pop up when you open it. The package could also be used as an elegant box for the oils on the bathroom shelf.

Ecma gave the Public Award of their European Carton Excellence Award 2018 to the packaging of Starskin #mask Boss VIP from the carton producer Omaks Packaging. The packaging is a book and a box in one. With a smart die cut it was possible to construct a book that could be produced as a box which contains seven facial masks. The book has many ways of folding, so that all parts of the printed paper are visible. Finalist of the Healthcare & Pharmaceuticals Award was the packaging for Mezym from Mezarini, produced by RLC Packaging Group. The multi-part packaging stands out due to its exclusive illustrations. When the cover is removed, the lower part of the cartonboard insert unfolds like a flower in different colours and patterns.

Cosfibel’s coffret for Yves Saint Laurent’s Mon Paris fragrance has the same shape as its bottle. The box, which has both an original and elegant opening gesture, required a specific construction technique. This limited-edition prestige coffret with its generously-sized cardboard structure features a tub that moves forward when the two outer doors are opened.

Model, in cooperation with Carecos Kosmetik, offers packaging coated with scented varnish which gives off the fragrance of the enclosed perfume via microscopic capsules, offering new opportunities at the POS. The folding box was encased in an additional sleeve. The front of the sleeve is embossed with the outline of the flacon, while the lower part features the Folco Scent scented varnish produced by Follmann. In this oil-based varnish, a scent that is identical to the package contents is encapsulated and preserved in microscopic beads. This avoids the POS being unpleasantly overwhelmed by the smell of perfume. Even after a year, the scent still develops to its full effect, as it is released only when the varnished area is touched, thereby destroying the microcapsules. Scented varnishes can be used in sheet offset, web offset, flexographic and screen printing.

Etiket Schiller’s stone paper labels are fluid-resistant
Etiket Schiller’s stone paper labels are fluid-resistant

Featuring sophisticated decoration and labelling

Etiket Schiller’s environmentally-friendly stone paper labels are water-resistant and suitable for use on greasy products such as creams or oils. The label material with its velvety feel consists of 80 % natural rock meal and 20 percent recycled PE. Their benefits over paper labels or PE film are that they are fluid-resistant and suitable for use in wet rooms, a distinct advantage for use directly on shampoos or shower gels. In a direct comparison, the material was found to be more tear-resistant than paper or cardboard. The stone paper labels have a high degree of whiteness – without the addition of bleach.

Kurz’ Lumafin series of semi-transparent stamping foils creates transparent effects and allows underprinted designs to shine through. Printed motifs overstamped with this foil obtain a different colour or depth of colour. The foil also produces mirror effects. When underprinting with multiple colours, the polychromatic design transforms into a monochrome, metallic-like gloss as the incident light changes. Additional tactile accents can be added by means of structured or relief embossing.

RLC Packaging Group present their HighLight lens technology: The application generates unusual 3D effects on the packaging. For this purpose, the company positions individual designs with 3D depth effect on bright white cardboard with register accuracy. The refraction of light creates three-dimensional images in the print that immediately catch the eye. Compared to conventional film finishing, this technology also reduces the use of film and offers a material-saving finishing alternative.
