F unctionality and convenience remain key NPD focus areas with scope for brands to stress easy application/removal, durability and fast absorption. There is definite scope for further innovation for black consumers who are looking for products made specifically for their skintone. While in APAC, our research reveals there is potential for sunscreen NPD with beauty benefits to appeal to some Asian consumers who appear more worried about the impact of UV on skin appearance than the risk of developing skin cancer.
Looking ahead, supporting and protecting the microbiome will become important elements when creating products. Brands can also find ways to help improve mental and physical wellbeing by leveraging hero skincare ingredients creating new formats and expanding into new benefits or skin types

Multifunctional use

In the UK, Ultra Violette Preen Screen SPF Reapplication Mist SPF 50 is alightweight mist which can be applied under or over makeup, with SPF high protection from UVB and UVB rays all day long. It delivers the essential extra dose of protection without mess and stinging. It contains soothing, skin-sweetening ingredients, including niacinamide, vitamin C, vitamin E, aloe vera and bisabolol. Bisabolol tackles redness and irritation and aloe vera leaf extract acts as a soothing extract that fights inflammation.

Photoageing defence

In the USA, Pavise Dynamic Age Defense SPF 30 uses a ‘most intelligent’ DiamondCore zinc oxide for superior protection and a ‘photoageing defence cocktail’ with skincare and beautifying benefits. Inspired by a full-body shield used to protect soldiers in the medieval times, it aims to provide superior and long-lasting protection from harmful UVA, UVB and high-energy visible light, for accelerated, comprehensive restoration of radiance and skin health. Safe for skin and the environment, the transparent and lasting formulas feature 100% FDA-approved mineral UV filters, 100% zinc oxide and PA++++.

Tailor-made for acne skin

In Vietnam, Blemish Control Sunscreen SPF 50, is part of the Mentholatum Acnes series, is marketed as ‘tailor-made for acne-prone skin’. It uses tea tree oil, vitamins B3 and B5, beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) and zinc oxide to soothe acne-prone skin and help maintain moisture. Sunscreen beads are wrapped in water capsule for optimal and durable sun protection, offering multi-dimensional reflection of UVA/UVB rays. BHA, zinc oxide and tea tree oil are antibacterial, non-greasy and prevent new acne formation. Duo vitamins B5 and B3, and dipotassium glycyrrhizate soothe acne skin, help maintain moisture and improve acne.
