L'Oréal acquires 100% of Cadum
L'Oréal has closed the acquisition of 100% of Cadum, the majority of which was held by investment fund Milestone. In 2011, Cadum achieved consolidated sales of 58 million euros, 49 million euros of which in France, mainly with the brand Cadum. This business will join France's Consumer Products Division lead by its General Manager Hervé Navellou. This division is made up of three business units: L'Oréal Paris, Garnier-Gemey-Maybelline and LaScad. Their products are distributed in mass retail channels.

BSB Innovation Award celebrates its 10th anniversary in Barcelona

On April 18th, during the In-Cosmetics exhibition in Barcelona, a total of 15 BSB innovation awards were made for finished products and ingredients at a gathering in the Princesa Sofia Gran Hotel as part of the 10th anniversary celebrations of the BSB Innovation Awards. The BSB special awards, presented by Dr. Jan Riedel went to Dr. Daniel Stangl of the La Prairie Group and to Dr. Klaus Stanzl of Symrise.

Beiersdorf: Sales increase of 6.9% in the first quarter of 2012
Beiersdorf increased sales in the first quarter of 2012 by 6.9% compared to the previous year. The Consumer business segment recorded growth of 6.8%, while tesa saw an increase of 7.2%. The company also benefited from a positive overall market trend in the first three months of 2012 after the weak business performance seen in Asia and Europe in the first quarter of the previous year. Positive calendar effects also contributed to the sales increase.

Mobile surface tension measurement: Kruss Bubble Pressure Tensiometer BP50

Checking the concentration of cleaning agents on site or determining the right time for additional dosage of surfactants in the electroplating bath: this is the domain of the BP50. Mobile and independent of the mains, easy to use, and still a powerful measuring instrument for dynamic surface tension. The measurement is defined and the instrument controlled by the BP50 add-in for LabDesk, the well-proven universal platform for KRÜSS tensiometers. Various measuring programmes record the time-dependent surface tension or the measured value curve for a constant surface age – or they evaluate a measured value as being valid or invalid in the rapid quality test. The database is comfortable and flexible; well-laid-out reports are quickly produced.

Core competence – esters: The new structure at Cremer Oleo

Cremer Oleo, Europe’s manufacturer of oleochemical speciality esters, assumed control of the operations of the Witten facilities from the Sasol Group on 1.3.2012. The MCT oils under the brand names CremerCoor and Miglyol find widespread use in the food, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics segments. Cremer Oleo has achieved a unique position as the world’s only manufacturer to operate high-performance mono plants exclusively for the production of MCT oils at the Wittenberge facilities, and GMP-certified production in two completely independent facilities in Witten and Wittenberge.

Albéa acquires Chinese factories of TEX R.L. group
Albéa has acquired the company Zhongshan Meiquan Plastic Products Co Ltd belonging to the TEX R.L. group. Better known under the name TEX China, the company manufactures packaging for the cosmetics and perfumery sectors. Located in Guangdong Province in China, TEX China has 700 employees and 3 factories specializing in the production of mascara, lip gloss, lipstick, pots and cases, etc. In 2011 the company recorded a turnover of 20 million dollars, of which 80% came from exports.

Natural cosmetics: Market on the move

Elfriede Dambacher, publisher of the "Natural Cosmetics Yearbook" (Naturkosmetik Jahrbuch 2012), outlines the challenges that the natural cosmetics market faces in Germany. With total sales of 815 million Euros in 2011 natural cosmetics in Germany enjoyed a market share of 6.5 percent. This makes the sector once again the biggest in Europe, and after the USA, it is the second biggest in the world. Among the five most important manufacturers are Weleda, Dr.Hauschka, Annemarie Boerlind, Lavera and Logona. But it should be noted that in recent years there have been a countless number of international brands pushing for a share of the market.

Avon: First quarter revenue down 2 %

The total revenue of $2.6 billion decreased 2%, up 1% in constant dollars. Total units declined by 1% and price/mix increased 2% during the quarter. Active Representatives were down 2%. On a category basis, Beauty sales declined 1%, up 2% in constant dollars. On a reported basis, color was flat, fragrance and skincare declined 1%, and personal care was down 2%. Constant-dollar Beauty was driven by growth in all categories; color was up 4%, fragrance increased 3%, skincare grew 2%, and personal care was up 1%.

After having launched the first French edition of BEAUTY FORUM Swiss in February 2011, this new trade journal called BEAUTY FORUM Edition Romande will be published 4 times per year. The French language edition BEAUTY FORUM Edition Romande is targeting cosmetic professionals from the Romandie, the French speaking part of Switzerland. Dr. Tilmann Reuter, Lecturer for Cosmetic Sciences at the University of Hamburg, presents the two basic theories for skin aging: One is the theory of oxidative stress, one is the theory based on the less active effects of hormones. He gives examples for the most impartant anti-ageing actives, for example vitamines or flavonoids and also explains why he thinks that peptides are the actives with most potential for future products and formulations.
