COSSMA editor Angelika Meiss asked representatives of Cognis, Laboratoires Sérobiologiques, Dermatest, Dow Corning, Mibelle and Symrise about current trends in facial care. She was interested to know the steps that the various companies are taking to meet these trends.
The moisturiser makes a comeback
A large number of cosmetics currently on the market today use words such as "hydro", aqua" and "moist" in their promotional message. The comeback of the moisturiser in cosmetics is hardly surprising – after all a properly bal-anced skin moisture level not only prepares the way for the successful use of other actives such as anti-oxidants and anti-ageing products, but can itself slow down the skin's ageing process. Andrea Weber, head of R&D at Babor, describes some of the latest actives and their mechanisms.

Last year the personal care products market in Spain grew by 5.7 percent and hit 7,872 million Euros. The value of goods pro-duced in Spain was 4,920 million Euros.

a mascara whose formula changes colour under UV light,
a powered facial cleanser
and a shampoo directing the movement of moisture on the hair to protect it from damage during growth.

Awards for unusual visual and tactile effects
The winners of the "Tube of the Year 2008" competition, organised by the European Tube manufacturers Association (Etma), were characterised by particularly appealing visual and tactile effects. The competition covers three facets of tube manufacture, i.e. plastic, laminate and metal tubes, plus a prototype category which is open to any type of tube.
