COSSMA editor Angelika Meiss spoke to Dr. Gerhard Nohynek, Scientific Director Global Safety at L’Oréal, about the hype surrounding nanoparticles in cosmetics. The bottom line is that there may be a lot of fuss, but little substance. Numerous studies sup-port the fact that nano-sized vesi-cles, titanium dioxide or zinc dioxide particles in sunscreens are totally harmless to the human skin.

Not so easy in practice

The cosmetics specialists at the chemical and veterinary research office in Karlsruhe (the CVUA), under the leadership of Dr. Gerd Mildau, sum up for us the findings of the Karlsruhe cosmetics conference on the "Boundaries between Cosmetics and Pharmaceu-ticals" that was held at the CVUA on December 6th last year: because the decisive criterion, i.e. "a significant pharmacological ac-tion", raises difficulties for all those involved more appropriate criteria should be developed.

This month Amanda Lintott of Mintel has picked out the following innovative products from the company’s Global New Products Database, GNPD:

Tetesept’s "Baths of the World" featuring the Japanese Onsen Bath and the Indian Maharaja Bath, a "Warming Stones" gift set from Avon and also from Avon a Lip Balm featuring a 12-month calendar on the outside of its tube.

Cleansing products

Until now our formulations page, with new formulation ideas each month on a selected theme, contained the details of just one particularly interesting example and a pointer to our web site, where further formulations on the same theme are available for downloading.

The formulation specials >> in the first two editions of the new COSSMA have proven so popular that from now on we will be presenting the formulations in a different way.

We will be printing, in the magazine, a range of formulations on the main theme (in this case cleansing products) as supplied by different companies.

In March we have 19 formulations from 15 companies for you to consider.
