Ulrike Marx of Zschimmer & Schwarz outlines the latest developments in personal cleansing formulations. The trend in personal cleansing products is towards emulsion-like systems such as shower oils, i.e. water-free emulsion concentrates consisting of a blend of surfactants with a high oil content.

Market Survey: Packaging suppliers

The COSSMA market survey of packaging suppliers has once again been completely updated for our readers, with about 150 companies replying to our survey questionnaire. In the 12 packaging categories that we specified 15 companies are aerosol specialists and 44 are suppliers of packaging for colour cosmetics. 10 companies produce applicators, brushes or sharpeners, 30 offer sample packaging solutions, and there are 20 suppliers of retail cartons. 48 suppliers of bottles and jars submitted their details, as did 32 companies involved in coding, labelling and sleeving. There are 54 suppliers of pumps, dispensers and airless systems, 37 packaging designers, 26 tube suppliers and 31 companies offering packaging machinery. Finally we have 19 companies supplying packaging materials or decoration services.

No health risk from hair colorants

Dr. Gerhard Nohynek, Scientific Director R&D at L’Oréal, presents the background and the results of a new study* looking into the systemic and local exposure to oxidative hair color-ants by hairdressers. The study results suggested that the level of exposure is so small that health risks are negligible.

Formulations: Sprays and mousses

In recent years sprays and mousses have enjoyed a real upsurge in popularity. Whilst until very recently the majority of sprays were either deodorants or hair care products there is now a whole range of personal care preparations in a spray format that are carving out a strong position for themselves in the market. Look at sun care, for example! For decades manufacturers experimented with sun protection sprays without achieving a real breakthrough.

When this application form was, so to speak, relaunched a few years ago it seems that the market was ready for such a development. Since then sun protection and after-sun sprays have built up a healthy 23 percent share of the market and are in number 2 position behind sun protection lotions and after-sun lotions, which account for 51.7 percent of the sun care sector.
