New stabiliser, multi-functional TiO2, and a bi-functional pigment

The speakers at the Merck Cosmetic Forum which took place in Darmstadt on January 24th and 25th of this year gave a fascinating insight into new ingredients as well as some interesting pointers to the latest trends in cosmetics. Headed by Merck's sales manager for Germany Dr. Matthias Lergenmüller, a number of in-house expertes presented the company's most significant new ingredients: the all-round stabiliser Oxynex ST Liquid, the multi-functional, thickener-compatible titanium dioxides Eusolex Tavo and T-Oleo, and the bi-functional pigment Timiron BF-1001.

Cosmetics legislation to note

At the Behr's “Cosmetics Legislation” seminar on February 2nd Matthias Ibel and Birgit Huber from the German Cosmetic, Toiletry, Perfumery and Detergent Association (the IKV) gave an overview of some current legal concerns. Birgit Huber explains here how the matter of product labelling of the 26 perfume substances, and the determination of storage life after opening, can be approached.

Skin analysis ? classical and innovative

Christiane Uhl, Sales and Marketing Manager of Courage + Khazaka, presents some new developments, as well as looking at some conventional procedures, in the field of skin analysis. The Rescovimeter, a device capable of measuring much more than skin elasticity, looks very promising, as do the data loggers with which in future it will be possible to carry out tests at home over a wide geographical area. The ability to analyse the characteristics of the fingernails is also expected to be the subject of increased interest.

Formulations: Bath and shower products

We have certainly seen some exciting developments in bath and shower products in recent years. It started with shower products with highly unusual fragrances. Then came exotic ingredients that were relaxing, invigorating or refreshing in a way similar to aromatherapy. Products with skin care ingredients appeared on the market, with the promise of even more benefits. Their role was not only to cleanse the body, but also to immediately moisturise the skin, which can become dry with showering. It's true to say that this is a bold statement, given the fact a shower gel is washed off immediately after it is applied, but it does respond to a consumer need. Even more exciting were the products that also promised to firm the skin ? a claim that is backed up by some manufacturers with a built-in massage head on the pack. Wouldn't it be nice if there were a shower gel with integrated sun protection, and we no longer had to go through that tedious routine of rubbing on sun tan cream!
