Improving permanent waving and hair straightening

The ability to wave naturally straight hair, and to straighten naturally wavy hair, has been a consumer need for a very long time. At the beginning of the 20th century several chemical proc-esses, known as cold-waving, were developed, making curling irons and heated curlers redundant. In his lit-erature review, consultant Miklos M. Breuer examines recent improvements in permanent waving and straighten-ing,  featuring a milder oxidation process, improved waving efficacy, prevention or repair of hair damage and attenuating the malodour of reducing agents.

Hair care products that offer something more

More and more specialised products, with better ingredients and new fragrances ? a fair summary of the current trend in the hair care products business. Dr Thomas W√ľnsch, Cosmetic Solutions Industry Management at BASF, sums up the latest product trends like this: "In 2004 in particular, a large number of new products appeared on the market. On the one hand there were products with very specific benefits for specific consumer groups, such as men, women or children.

Russia: slower growth, but still good potential

The market for personal care products in Russia in 2004 was valued at 6442.9 million US Dollars, which for the first time meant a slow-down in rate of growth. Nevertheless, the market has grown by 59.9 percent since 1997, and certain categories, namely depilatory products, baby care, men's grooming, and bath and shower products did not suffer this decline. Euromonitor estimates that sales will continue to grow by 7 percent on an annual basis, reaching 9 billion Dollars by 2009.

SCC meeting in New York: Scientific findings for better products

It is also important to consider that the skin's regenerative ability becomes less effective with age.
